Le Fairy ring dans "Le Lit Mac Arthur"

Publié le par Eric Bertrand

Extrait du "Lit Mac Arthur", en traduction : In the spring and summer, when they knew their lines by heart, “the Moon Woman” would take “the budding actors” to the castle garden to rehearse; she would ask them to find the right intonations and stage presence along the paths, among the rhododendrons and azaleas; or, when the weather was damp, she would lead them beneath the giant sequoias and majestic cedars, into what she called “the fairy ring,” to delve deeper into “Shakespeare’s fairy tales.” According to her, this place was conducive to daydreaming; there they found the ideal setting to recite texts to which they gave a special flavor. At the very back of the park, facing the old bridge whose stone eye seemed to be watching him, Niall liked to lie down under the tall oaks and shout at the top of his lungs while writhing in the grass: “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is wrapped in sleep.”

Outside the castle, in the gardens—where the whimsical Janey Callander, mother of Niall and Elspeth, used to have her children act out scenes from *A Midsummer Night’s Dream*—it is said that fairies gather. This place is called the “Fairy Ring,” and magic is everywhere—on the shores of the loch, in the forests, and in Kilchurn Castle, the origin of the MacArthur bed, which, during the 17th century, was a gift from the MacArthur clan to the Campbell clan as a gesture of reconciliation following fierce battles.
